Valerie Deion [65], of Cranston passed away in her home that she shared with her mother Edna Deion on Tuesday February 8th. She was a peaceful, quiet soul with a passion for knitting and taking care of others.
Valerie received her education at The University of Rhode Island, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology & Elementary Education. Later in life, she received her Masters Degree in Special Education – Preschool Handicapped from Rhode Island College. She also received her Professional Teacher of Elementary Grades Certification from the State of Rhode Island.
More often than not, Val could be found sitting quietly in her rocking chair, knitting a beautiful sweater, blanket or hat that would be gifted to someone in need; it is said with much affection that "we could open a yarn store" with the excess yarn in the attic and around the house. Val's nieces and nephews also have fond memories of sitting at the kitchen counter as children, covered in flour and sprinkles, baking gingerbread houses or cookies. Valerie was an incredible talent, and she shared her gentleness with everyone in her life.
Valerie spent much of her career as a Case Manager at the Cranston Center, working with developmentally-disabled adults and monitoring their services. She concluded her professional career supporting the Alumni office at LaSalle Academy. She was a member of local sewing organizations and offered to help friends in the area with knitting projects whenever needed. In a time of increased need for technology, Valerie educated herself to use the computer, and enjoyed virtual yoga and exercise classes, as well as local church services.

Besides her mother, she is survived by her sister Lori Drummond, brothers Mark S Deion, John Deion and wife Deborah, Mathew T. Deion and former wife Toni Deion as well as many loved nieces and nephews; Stephen Deion, Christopher Deion, Jennifer Drummond, Daniel Drummond, Annette Deion, Mathew Deion II, and great-nephew Elijah Drummond. She was the sister of the late Lynn Duchesneau and beloved granddaughter of the late George and Mary Galer.
Funeral services and burial were private.
