Interment February 17

Walter Keller Strawn, age 91, of Elwood, IL passed peacefully into the loving arms of his eternal life on the morning of February 12, 2022, with his daughte by his side.

Walter was born in Joliet, IL and moved to Elwood, IL in 1942. He attended Joliet Township High School and joined the United States Air Force in 1950. He was stationed at Burtonwood, England where he met his wife Catherine in Irlam. The couple married on January 24, 1953, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Joliet. Upon the completion of Walter's service, the couple moved back to Elwood where they enjoyed life as a young married couple and became involved in the community. Walter worked at various places including Sears, Blockson Corporation and eventually Olin, where he began to work his way up to management for many years. He retired as a corporate trainer in 1991. Walter and Catherine were blessed with a baby girl in 1968, and were devoted, loyal parents throughout her life. From piano lessons, Chicago museums, pets, orthodontics, travel, high school and college, through her adulthood and being really good company, they will be profoundly missed but never far away. After Walter's retirement from Olin, he spent his retirement years taking woodworking classes at Joliet Central before being appointed to the Joliet Arsenal Development Authority for over 25 years, Chairman for most of it, and he was a Village Trustee of Elwood for over ten years where he also served as appointed and acting mayor until 2009. He was involved in the Elwood Community in numerous capacities most of his life. Walter enjoyed his largely volunteer public service in his later life very much, and his wife and daughter are very proud of him for that as well as his extraordinary strength, courage and successes in the face of seemingly insurmountable health challenges in recent years. Personally, Walter loved his wife and daughter, his extended family, his pets, golfing on Saturday and watching baseball and PBS programs with his wife.

Walter is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Catherine, his parents, Isaiah and Mildred Strawn, two brothers, one sister, two half-brothers and several in-laws.

Interment with full military honors took place at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood following the funeral service.
