Sandy M. Hatton-Blood
December 6, 1941 - October 23, 2005
Grand Rapids, MI
Sandra Hatton-Blood was a joy-filled woman who was full of life. As a wonderful wife and mother, an excellent teacher and lifelong learner, Sandra inspired and encouraged many to live life as the gift that it is.

Sandra was born at a time when America was being drawn into the war in Europe . In fact her birth occurred the day before the U.S. was bombed at Pearl Harbor. Men quickly stepped up to enlist in the war effort and women joined the country's work force, giving them a taste of competence and independence that they would hold onto even after the end of World War II. Television was becoming more available to the public and a digital computer, weighing 30 tons and standing two stories high, was first built. With all these changes came one more for the Howard and Lucy (Bielski) Hatton family. Their lovely daughter, Sandra, was born on December 6, 1941 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She received the full attention of her parents as an only child on whom they could lavish their love. The nurture Sandy received at home helped shape the curiosity, creativity, and joy that stayed with Sandy throughout her life.

Graduating from Union High School in Grand Rapids, Sandy went on to college to earn a teaching degree and later a master's degree from Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan. Teaching English and Creative Writing at Creston High School for over 30 years, Sandy influenced many, many lives with her knowledge and vitality. Sandy was an excellent teacher and creative artist. She won the Teacher of the Year award several times and was awarded honors for her poetry writing, some of which have been published on poetry.com. Sandy helped establish the Upward Bound program which gives high school students the opportunity to experience college during the summer months. Countless students as well as many student teachers were inspired by her enthusiasm for learning.

Love also filled Sandy's life when she met and married Ray Blood. Together they raised their dear daughter Joy, and together they mourned the death of their sweet daughter Julia who died in infancy. Sandy and Ray shared a life of joy and challenges. Throughout the years, Sandy's love and care brought Ray through his medical struggles. And when Sandy became a grandmother, her loved overflowed to Raymond, Gabriel, Sophia, and Elizabeth as she spent time with them helping with homework, singing with them, praying with them, or simply watching them. Sandy adored her family and just plain loved people. She enjoyed going out with friends or chatting with them on-line. Her great sense of humor made Sandy easy to be around.

Sandy's energy for life extended into her leisure time activities. In addition to writing poetry, Sandy enjoyed all kinds of music, playing the flute, and singing. Always the teacher, Sandy collected books of literature and she also tried to learn Spanish. Her love for travel took Sandy from fishing holes to Disneyworld, from picnics to camping trips, from color tours to antique shops, from outlet malls to casinos. The simple pleasures of having her hair done every Friday, of taking in the beauty of flowers, of enjoying a meal with friends or family made life sweet for Sandy. Whether it was cooking for others or having her daughter Joy cook for her, Polish food was sure to be on the menu at one time or another. Sandy especially delighted in Christmas when her collection of angels sparkled with the joy of the season and her family was gathered round. Sandy made life beautiful for everyone around her.

Sandra Hatton-Blood loved life and lived it to the full. She will be deeply missed by those who love her dearly.
