He was the son of Berend Baar and Elizabeth Oosterheert. He emigrated to the United States with his parents and sister, Jantje Baar (Tholen) in 1889 aboard the ship, "Obdam.

He married Theresa Berghuis in Chicago on 27 Nov 1907. They had one son David Benneth Baar.
