James Daniel Browning

Browning, Dan; 92, passed at his home in Albany.

He was born in San Bernardino, California to John Leveret and Loretta Barber Browning.

He played on the 1944 State Champion Marshfield football team and graduated from Marshfield High School (1944).

He earned a Bachelor's of Science in Chemistry (1948) and a Bachelor's of Education (1952) from University of Oregon, and a Master's of Science (1963) from Stanford University.

Dan was a dedicated high school science teacher, first at Monroe High School and then at Crooked River High School in Prineville. He joined the staff of Eugene's Sheldon High School when it opened in 1963, teaching Chemistry, Physics, and Math until he retired.

Dan bred and trained Golden Retriever field dogs. His beloved dog Moll-Leo Cayenne was the first amateur-trained US Golden Retriever to achieve both FC & AFC awards and is in GRCA Field Dog Hall of Fame.

Later he became a serious woodworker, making beautiful wooden bowls on his lathe, selling them in craft fairs and galleries.

His first wife Marjorie Ruth Bier Browning died in 1981.

In 1984, he met and married his second wife, Doris Groves Browning. He and Doris traveled all over the world.

Dan is survived by his wife Doris; daughters Mary, Sally, and Susan; stepdaughters Janice and Margaret; eight grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Marjorie, his parents, and his nine brothers and sisters.

No memorial service will be held locally. Dan will be cremated and laid to rest in the family plot in Allegany, Oregon.
