Curtis H. Hvinden, 90, of rural Maddock, ND passed away peacefully Thursday, February 3, 2022 at his home. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later time in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Viking Lutheran Cemetery: 3251 51st Avenue NE Maddock, ND 58348.

Curtis H. Hvinden was born August 17, 1931 to Herman and Cecelia (Bergsgaard) Hvinden in South Viking Township, where he lived and worked his entire life. He was baptized and confirmed at the Viking Lutheran Church. Curtis graduated from the Benson County Agricultural and Training School in 1949, where he was active in FFA.

Curtis was united in marriage to Lorraine Holje on October 27, 1951. To this union, the couple welcomed five children: Steven, James, Sandra, Susan and Mark. Lorraine passed away on December 20, 1979. Curtis married Lillian Olson-Severtson on November 29, 1980 at the North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock. To this union, Curtis gained two step-children, Robert Severtson and Sally Severtson Mix.

Curtis was very active in the Maddock community, serving on numerous boards. He served on the South Viking Township board, Viking Mutual Insurance and McLean County Insurance board and Maddock Farmer's Union board. Curtis was a member of the North Viking Church and served on the Viking Church council. He was also a member of the Sons of Norway, was a Benson County Commissioner for 24 years and served on the rural Fire Department board as a member and treasurer.

Curtis was a lifelong farmer who enjoyed watching his crops grow and mature. He enjoyed lending a hand with livestock chores, whether it was feeding livestock or mending a fence. Curtis had a passion for restoring antique tractors and trail rides in his younger years in his covered wagon. He especially enjoyed drinking a cup of coffee with his many friends and family. Curtis will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Curtis is survived by his children, Steven (Sandra) Hvinden of Boulder City, NV, James (Jonelle) Hvinden of Maddock, ND, Sandra (Jacob) Hoffner of Yankton, SD, Susan McFerran of Mesa, AZ and Mark Hvinden (Connie Hamilton) of Fargo, ND; ND; step-children, Robert Severtson and Sally Severtson (Keith) Mix; special friend, Delores Lautt of Harvey; 11 grandchildren, Shane (Jennifer) Hvinden, Stephanie (Joshua ) Lee, Stacey (Jeremy) Steele, Eric Hvinden, Miranda Hvinden, Aprille (Matthew) Luger, Joshua (Anna Jo) Hoffner, Adam (Melissa) Hoffner, Matthew Hoffner, Deidre (Vincent) Jensen and Rachel McFerran; 18 great-grandchildren, Zoey Hvinden, Judah Hvinden, Ezekiel Hvinden, Isaac Hvinden, Ava Hvinden, Mackenzie Hvinden, Elias West, Coraline West, Elise Steele, Xavier Steele, Madeline Luger, Esmae Luger, Miles Hoffner, Archie Hoffner, Ava and Nathan, Carter Jensen and Isabella McFerran; brother-in-law, David (Jane) Holje, step-grandchildren Aric, Dusty, Annie and Shelby Severtson and Trevor Severtson, and his sister-in-law Ilene Olson Georgeson of Bowman, ND.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Cecelia (Bergsgaard) Hvinden; his wives, Lorraine and Lillian; sister, Delores Stenberg; brothers-in-law, Donald Stenberg and Marvin (Carol) Holje, Stanley Olson, Sherman Olson and Palmer Georgeson, sister-in-law Phyllis Carrigan and special cousin, Gordon (Mavis) Arne and numerous aunts, uncle and cousins.

His grand daughter Stephanie Sandra Hvinden West Lee passed on 8 Aug 2022. FAG# 243141518. She is the daughter of Steven and Sandra Hvinden, son of Curtis and Lorraine.
