Biebl, 77, of Ely died Monday, May 28, 2012, at Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth after beginning her recovery from open heart surgery. JoAnn was born on Aug. 21, 1934, in Corydon, Iowa to Mae and Jay Culbertson. The family lived in Iowa, Lutsen, Two Harbors and Barnum. On July 17, 1953, she married Glenn Biebl and they shared their life of 58 years together in Barnum, moving to Ely in 1957; to Winton from 1959-1966 and then back to Ely. She took great pride in her business of 41 years, "Cobweb Antiques." You can't meet many people who've ventured to Ely who haven't taken a spin into the "Web." JoAnn never felt she was a good cook/baker, but her food and fellowship were shared by many and loved by all. Her family's favorite were her cabbage rolls. She truly loved her "coffee group." She was a voracious reader and promoter of various Ely causes, including the Ely Public Library. Square dancing was a big part of Glenn and JoAnn's life in the '70s and '80s. Cards and cribbage were a favorite pastime. In recent years JoAnn painted many paint-by-numbers. She was very humble about them but they are incredible. She was an active member of Ely United Methodist Church, serving as past treasurer and as an integral part of the pasty crew. JoAnn was a wonderful mom, grandma and loving wife. She loved and is so missed by Peca, their sweet little dog. She is survived by her husband Glenn; children, Glenda Jo (Steve) Harbaugh of Hartland, Wis., Brian (Cassie) Biebl of Dillon, Colo., and Sandy (Dennis) Shoemaker of Ramsey, Minn.; grandchildren Stephanie Mae and Ted Joseph Harbaugh, Courtney Jay and Ben Tyler Bieble, Riley Dennis and Griffin Rory Shoemaker and a brother, Richard (Inge) Culbertson. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 4, 2012 at the Ely United Methodist Church on Camp Street with the Rev. Dana Thompson officiating. Memorials are preferred to the Ely Public Library or Ely United Methodist Church. Arrangements are with the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.
