Mrs. Peter N Petersen, who was critically burned Friday, died at 5 o'clock Tuesday morning, at University hospital in Iowa City, where she had been taken from Atlantic Memorial hospital on Friday. Her age was 87. Mrs. Petersen lived with her son, Anton, on a farm a mile and a half north of Anita. Last Friday morning she lighted a stove accidentally with gasoline. It is thought she had become confused when filling her container for tanks of gasoline and kerosene were side by side near the house. She received severe burns on an estimated 95 per cent of her body.
Mrs. Petersen was the former Miss Rachael Gillpatrick, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gillpatrick. She was born April 10, 1885, near West Branch and came to the Anita vicinity with her parents when three years old. She spent her entire life in this area except for four years in South Dakota. She was married Aug. 30, 1920 to Peter N. Petersen who preceded her in death in March, 1949.
Surviving are two sons, George Largey of Ruthven, born to a previous marriage, and Anton; one daughter, Mrs. William Claussen of Anita; five grandchildren; two Sisters, Miss Alice Gillpatrick of Anita and Mrs. Anna (Leslie of Cumberland; and two brothers, William of Anita and George of Ben Alto, Alberta Canada. One son, Wilbur Largey, died while a child. Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 2 o'clock at Holy Cross Lutheran church by Rev. Rodney W. Riese, and burial will be in Anita Evergreen cemetery. The brother George, who lives in Canada, is expected here Friday. -Anita Tribune, January 15, 1953
