US Presidential Cabinet Secretary, US Congressman. He served as the Acting United States Secretary of Commerce (following the sudden death of Howard Malcolm Baldridge Jr) during the Administration of President Ronald W. Reagan from July 1987 until October 1987. A member of the Republican Party, he served Ohio's 7th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1965 until 1983. His father was former US Congressman Clarence J. Brown Sr from Ohio, Clarence Jr served with the United States Navy during the closing months of World War II. Following his return home, he enrolled at Duke University from where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree and later earned a degree in Business from Harvard. He resumed his military experience during the Korean War and following his return home, he became an executive with his family's publishing company. During his tenure in Congress, he was responsible for several important pieces of legislation regarding energy and conservation. In 1982, he had a failed bid for Governor of Ohio. One-year later, he joined the Reagan Administration to serve as United States Deputy Secretary of Commerce (1983 to 1988).
