Andrew Jackson "Tasso" Welch was the son of Edmund Lilly Welch and Damaris (Kent) Welch. He was born in Mississippi. During the Civil War the family lived beside the Tennessee River at Eastport, Tishomingo County, Mississippi. He worked for the US Post Office for over 40 years in Corinth, Memphis, and Chattanooga. For 25 of those years he was Chief Clerk of the railway mail service between Chattanooga and Memphis. On April 20, 1918 he died unexpectedly at the postal building in Chattanooga, Tennessee. His body was taken to Memphis for burial at Elmwood Cemetery. (Note 1: The cemetery's online search misspells his last name as Walch but spells his wife's name correctly as Welch. Note 2: Although his death certificate shows his birth year as 1856, family records and census records indicate his birth was in 1858.)
