Joseph L Bortin
Graveside services will be held Sunday for San Francisco attorney Joseph L Bortin, 60, at Home of Peace Cemetery, Colma.
Bortin died yesterday [18 May 1978]. He practiced law here for more than 90 years. In 1976 he defended his son, Michael Bortin, linked by authorities to the Symbionese Liberation Army.
He was a graduate of the University of Missouri and studied at Hastings College of the Law. He was a first lieutenant in the Navy during World War II and came to San Francisco in 1937.
Twice in the early 1960s Democrat Bortin ran unsuccessfully for Congress. In 1962, he was beaten by then-Assemblyman Phillip Burton in the race to fill the House seat vacated by the death of former Mayor John Shelley.
Bortin was involved in court actions stemming from an allegation that in 1972 he slapped a Chronicle reporter. The battery case was settled out of court, and Bortin settled his own suit charging the Chronicle with damaging his reputation.
Bortin is survived by his wife, Barbara, and by his children Michael, Betty, Jeffrey, Elise, Seth, Joshua and Jane. He also is survived by his father, Harry Bortin Sr., and by two brothers. The family asks that contributions be made to Women's American O.R.T. in San Francisco.
