Peter Klingler, West Walnut street, died of a heart condition Friday afternoon. He had been in ill health for some time, bedfast frequently, and for the past several weeks at his home. He was aged 81 years and had been, a Sunday School member for 78 years.
He was born in Jackson Township just east of New Berlin, son of George and Lydia Moyer Klingler. He began his Sunday School career at the Sabbath School organized and held in the Ulrich's one-room public school near his home. Prof. William Noetling, grandfather of Frank Noetling, principal of Trevorton schools; Dr. John Noetling and Rev. Simon Barber, a retired Methodist Episcopal minister, were among the organizers of that Sunday School, the first in its area at that time, 77 years ago. Among the superintendents were Soly Wetzel, Conrad Mitchell and Abraham Eyer, the latter the grandfather of Frank A. Eyer, Selinsgrove.
Mr. Klingler was educated at the local schools and Union Seminary at New Berlin, later Central Pennsylvania College; Freeburg Academy and Lock Haven State Teachers' College. He received his pharmaceutical education at the University of Buffalo and then served an apprenticeship as a clerk in pharmacies in Philadelphia and Bethlehem and as the manager of stores in Patton and Lykens. He came to Selinsgrove from Lykens in 1902, taking over the store in North Market street of (Continued on last page)
(Continued from page one) which he was proprietor up until two weeks ago when he decided to sell the business. The sale of articles in the store is continuing all this month.
He is survived by his wife, the former Clara Trutt. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Sunday School and in 1933 was honored with the designation of elder emeritus, the only member of the congregation ever so honored.
Dr. Klingler, because of his gentle disposition his keen interest in his fellow-men, was loved by the entire community old and young.
For years his drug store has been a meeting place for social gatherings of a group of the older townsmen. Both the Doctor and Mrs. Klingler, who worked together until the store was closed several weeks ago, ideal mates, made their pharmacy an institution in the community. Both are held in the highest esteem. Their place of business will be missed as will the venerable proprietor.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home in charge of Rev. Edward Ullrich, pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church. Burial was made in the family crypt in the mausoleum in West Side Cemetery.
