He attended school in District 18, Fillmore county, and he also attended Fairmont high school. At an early age he joined the Fairmont Methodist church, later transferring his membership to the First Methodist church of Geneva.
He spent his entire life in the Fairmont and Geneva communities, living on the same farm west of Geneva the past 34 years.
He was united in marriage to Dorothy V. Christiancy in 1928. To this union were born three children, Royal Herbert Jr., Delores Maxine and James Clayton.
He was past noble grand of the Geneva I. O. O. F. lodge 65, a member of Silver Link Rebekah Lodge No. 14, past master of the Geneva Community Grange No. 403 and past president and county board member of the Fillmore county Farm Bureau.
Throughout his life he was interested in sports and the outdoors.
He enjoyed playing baseball and basketball as a younger man and until his final illness; he was an ardent golfer and bowler. He was a loyal supporter of sports in which the young people of his community participated.
He was considered a progressive farmer and was always willing to lend a helping hand to his neighbors and friends whenever he was needed. He served many years on a rural school board, assisted at the county fair and also filled many other civic posts.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Surviving besides his wife, are two sons, Royal Herbert Jr. of Richardson, Tex., and James C who attends the University of Nebraska; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Delores) Delaney of York; five grandchildren, Andrew and Lucinda Nichols and Michael, Donnie and Jackie Sue Delaney; his mother of Fairmont; brothers, Francis of Fairfield, Ia.; Gordon of Fairmont, Wilber of Geneva, and Donald of York, one sister, Mrs. S. E. (Marian) Doss of Gentry, Ark.
Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Wednesday, March 30, at the First Methodist church of Geneva with Dr. Everett E. Jackman officiating. Mrs. H. A. Rosenau, accompanied by Mrs. Melvin Olson, sang “Beyond the Sunset” and “Some Time We’ll Understand.”
Pallbearers were Alvin Biester, George Bordner, Virgil Clinkenbeard, Howard Hamilton, John Pittard and Jesse Richards. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery.
