ALVA GASKILL LAID TO REST
Military Funeral Held Sunday Afternoon For Calhoun County's Second Deceased Soldier Boy--Attended By More Than 1,200 People

The funeral services over the remains of Alva Gaskill, whose death at Camp Dodge was announced to the Index last week, were held from the Methodist church in Rinard on Sunday afternoon.

The people of Rinard had never witnessed such a crowd of people in their midst as came to pay their last regards to Calhoun county's departed soldier lad, who was the second one to give up his life for his country in its present conflict.

There is the most compelling need for men of virtue and patriots to be good soldiers for God and country and the world. Our stalwart and patriotic young men are responding to thee need and are going forward to the camp and trench and battlefield in defense of righteousness and justice...

Alva William Gaskill was born in Cedar township, Calhoun County, Iowa, August 4, 1893. With the exception of two years he lived all his life in Calhoun County. He was well known to all of us and was liked by all...

At Camp Dodge, he contracted measles, which developed into pneumonia and other derangements of his physical system which resulted in his death May 9, 1918. Alva would have been twenty-five years old if he had lived until August 4. His mother departed this life April 11, just four weeks before Alva. On account of his serious condition due to his illness, he was not told of his mother's death.

Those left to mourn his early death are his father, Geo. W. Gaskill, of Perry, Ia; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Morton of Perry, and Mrs. Verna Heath of Rinard; two brothers, Fred of Rinard, and Bert of Lake City, Ia...

We wish to express our sincere and heartfelt thanks to all those who so kindly assisted us after the death of Alva, "Our Soldier Boy" and also for the beautiful floral offerings.
