Russell L Berg
Belgrade-- Russell L. Berg's life-long interest in agriculture and livestock, particularly horses, lead to his purchasing a farm in partnership with his nephews on Beaver Creek, and later to the irrigated farm he developed with his wife near Belgrade.
Shoeing, driving, packing, and camping with horses were his hobbies. His fondness for Western music found expression in his guitar playing, and he spent many happy hours playing for family and friends.
Mr. Berg, 47, died Monday in Seattle, Wash., of cancer.
He was born in Lewistown, the son of Bernard and Mary Long Berg. His early years were spent on the family farm on Beaver Creek. He attended Paradise Valley School, Fergus County High School and MSU, and was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. He was employed by the MSU veterinary research laboratory while earning a master's degree in microbiology in 1967. During these years he was involved in the development of a vaccine for bovine vibriosis and published numerous articles in scientific magazines. He married Sonja Lachenmaier in 1961 in Boseman.
Survivors include his wife; three brothers, Donald of Denver, George of Lewistown, Raymond of Havre; nine sisters, Mrs. Ken (Alice) Mees and Mrs. Gail (Rose) Bachman, both of Lewistown, Mrs. Lee (Betty) Woodruff and Mrs. Bill (Joyce) Elliott, both of Cody, Wyo., Mrs. Wayne (Margaret) Randolph of Billings, and Mrs. Lloyd (Joan) Mason, Mrs. Wendell (Leona) West, Mrs. Keith (Ruth) Walla, and Mrs. Ron (Naomi) Myers, all of Seattle, Wash.
