Dr. Donald Dale Baker, 88, of Inglewood Way, died Friday.
Born in Lone Tree, Iowa, he was a son of the late H.U. and Linda Robinson Baker. He was a former resident of Ft. Meyers, Indianapolis, and Wabash, Indiana and he had made his home in Greenville since 1979.
Dr. Baker graduated from high school in 1916 an(sic) spent the next three years in military service with the Iowa national Guard and the 126 Machine Gun Battalion in World War I, as a Second Lieutenant serving oversees from 1918-1919. He graduated from the Veterinary College at Iowa State University with honors and recently was the recipient of their “Gentle Doctor” award. He entered general practice in 1923 and during his years of practice appeared on national and state veterinary programs in the central west. He also furnished original practice items for the veterinary journals which were indexed in the Library of Congress. In 1942, he began a career as commercial veterinarian. This involved selling and consultation to veterinarians over the state of Indiana. This firm later became a subsidiary of Eli Lilly & Co. from which he retired in 1962.
He was a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the American Legion and was a Mason in Indiana and was past president of the Indiana State Veterinarian Association.
His wife, Edith Swain Baker, died July 15, 1982.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Willard A. (Marilyn) Metcalf of Greenville; two sons, Dr. Robert S. Baker of Indianapolis, Indiana and James K. Baker of Columbus, Indiana; two sisters, Mrs. Burton (Marian) Coffin of Nashville, Tenn. And Mrs. Eva Snyder of Vista, Calif.; a brother, Howard Baker of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 11:00 a.m. in Woodlawn Memorial Park by Dr. Bryan Crenshaw and Rev. William R. Claytor, Jr.
The body is at The Mackey Mortuary.
The family is at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Metcalf, 401 McCarter Avenue.
It is respectfully requested that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 2 Sevier Street, Greenville 29605 or to the charity of one’s choice.
