DR. SAMUEL WILLIAM SCANTLAN

Dr. Sam W. Scantlan, 96, died in Oklahoma City on Jan. 20, 1998. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at First Baptist Church, Davis. The Rev. Finis Steelman will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery with arrangements by Fox Funeral Home.

"Dr. Sam" was born on Feb. 24, 1901, in Cuba, Mo., to Samuel Jeremiah and Edna Bell Key Scantlan. He grew up on a farm near Cuba. On Aug. 21, 1922, he married Naomi Ruth Britton, who preceded him in death. Though, when they married Sam and Naomi had never been more than 10 or 15 miles away from home, in the 57 years of their marriage they traveled all over the world. Sam's first job was as a foreman on a large ranch owned by the family doctor, Dr. W.S. Cox. Sam and Naomi both trusted the Lord as their Savior in a revival service at Shepherd Hill Baptist Church, a little country church in their farm community. In 1923, that church ordained Scantlan as a deacon.

In 1925, they moved to Chandler. He worked as a truck driver for Magnolia Oil Company. After the company moved them to St. Louis, Okla., he surrendered to preach, quit his job, and moved to Shawnee in order to attend Oklahoma Baptist University. Having only an eighth grade education, he finished his high-school and college work and graduated from O.B.U. in 1936. In 1957, O.B.U. conferred on him the Doctor of Divinity Degree.

"Dr. Sam" was pastor at seven Southern Baptist Churches. They included First Baptist Church of Avery, Rock Creek Baptist Church near Shawnee, First Baptist Church of St. Louis, and Fairview Baptist Church near Shawnee. In 1940, when he became pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, it was the third largest Baptist church in the state. After retirement, "Dr. Sam" pastured Central Baptist Church near Sulphur and Beaty Baptist Church near Pauls Valley.

In 1938, Scantlan became the Rural Church Missionary for the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma. In 1944, he returned to the Baptist Convention to become the first director of the newly-formed Department of Missions. He served as Missions Director for 23 years, during which time he also served as business manager for Falls Creek Baptist Assembly near Davis, and for a short time as superintendent of Boys Ranch Town in Oklahoma City. When he retired in 1956, he and Naomi moved to Davis. After retirement in 1971 and 1972, he was elected president of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma.

Scantlan was proud of having been listed in "Who's Who in Oklahoma City," "Who's Who in International Poetry," "Who's Who in International Authors," and "Who's Who in Religion in America." He authored four books: Andrew Potter – The man and An Epoch, and a book of poetry, Through God's Revolving Doors. He has written the lyrics for several songs and hundreds of poems and essays. For several years he wrote a column, "One Man's Viewpoint," for The Davis News. He also had a weekly column in his home county-seat town, Steelville, Mo.

Several years after his wife, Naomi's death, Scantlan married his wife's half-sister, Alice Cook. She died a year later. He later married Juanita Shelby of Davis, who also preceded him in death.

Scantlan is survived by two daughters, Willa Ruth and her husband, Dr. J. Lyle Garlow of Oklahoma City, Sue Hannah and her husband, Jerry Morris, of Tyler, Texas; four grandchildren, Dawne Tybas of Oklahoma City, Sam J. Garlow of Shawnee, Michael Moore of Plano, Texas, and Marshall Moore of Austin, Texas; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by twin sons who died at birth in 1924.

Pallbearers will be Jack Fox, Miles Judkins, Dr. David Eggenberg, Wayne Poyner, Bob Tucker, Hollis Huckabaa and Frank Heaton. Honorary bearers are members of the Davis Kiwanis Club and pastors who are able to attend. Memorials may be made to the Davis First Baptist Church building fund in memory of Dr. Sam Scantlan.
