Claude Everette Austin passed away February 17, 2018.

He was born March 20, 1921 in Lincoln County, NC. He was the son of the late Harny T. Austin and Annie C. Austin.

Claude spent his younger years in Lincoln County before his family moved to Caldwell County. He worked in the furniture industry in Lenoir for many years. After the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the US Navy in June 1944 and was honorably discharged in March 1946. He received four medals: Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, Philippines Liberation Medal, American Area Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. After his military duty, he attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering in Milwaukee, WI. Claude used this knowledge as he continued working in the furniture industry.

Claude married Hilda Bryant on October 20, 1951. The lived in Lenoir until October 2006 when the moved to Grace Ridge Retirement Community in Morganton.

Along with his parents, Claude is preceded in death by his only child, Kay Austin May; a son-in-law, Homer May; an infant granddaughter, Susan May and a grandson, David May.

Claude is survived by his wife Hilda of Morganton, three grandsons, Michael May (Tara) of Virginia, Scott May (Mindilu) of Missouri and John May of Waxhaw, NC. He is also survived by eight great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Pendry's Funeral Home. A private interment will follow.
