John Clatterbuck was the son of Reuben Clatterbuck and Martha Patsy Griffin. He was born in Virginia, and removed to Shelby County Kentucky, and then in 1826 moved to Callaway County, Missouri.
He married 1. Martha B. Reynolds, the daughter of William R. Reynolds and Lucy E. Holt on April 29, 1830. They had three children: William Payne and James and Lucy Ann.
He married 2.Mary Head Overton, daughter of Lewis James Overton and Sarah Gibbs on March 31, 1847. They had one daughter, Sarah Francis.
He was a founding member of the Dry Fork Baptist Church.
