Mr. Buffington was born in Gainesville, Ga., but had lived in Thomson most of his life.
He was a retired farmer and a member of the Methodist church.
Surviving are two sons, R. L. Buffington of Thomson and Ralph Buffington of Dublin, Ga.; two daughters, Mrs. Blanche Sewell and Mrs. Kathleen Kitchens of Augusta; 17 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Lillie Gilmore of Warrenton, Ga.; three stepsons, Dorsey and Alvin Kennedy of Thomason and Clinton Kennedy of Brunswick, Ga.; 17 step-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at Elliott Sons' Chapel Thursday at 2 p.m., the Rev. W. L. Hazel officiating.
Burial will follow in West View Cemetery, Thomson, Ga.
