Born circa 1858. Known as "painter Nick". This is not the Nicholas Schu, #51673770, who also died in Wayland, NY.

Nicholas married Miss Adaline "Ada" B. Hoppough of Canadice, NY.

"Yes, whiskey did it, caused Nicholas Schu of Wayland to commit suicide. The following are pitiful extracts from a letter to his wife the day before: "I see now that I have made a great mistake all my life time. Do not go back on me to think that I have abused you and the little ones so shamefully, but it was not me, it was WHISKEY. If I could stop the manufacture of the vile stuff, I would be willing to go to prison for ten years. If every man that drinks feels as I do just now there must be an
awful feeling on earth today." (March 26, 1896, The Times of Canisteo, NY)

"Wayland - The body of Nicholas Schu was found hanging in the woodshed at his home in this place this morning. He had been absent from the house but a short time. Schu was a painter and has had rather hard luck and as no prospects of better times appeared it is thought he became despondent and sought relief in death. It is also thought that he had taken Paris green. Schu leaves a wife and children." (March 27, 1896, The Times of Canaseraga, NY)

"N. H. Schu, a painter of the village of Wayland, took his life early Monday morning. First he took a quantity of Paris green and then fastened a rope to a joist in the woodshed made a slip noose and hung himself. His wife had been away during the night and came home about 8 o'clock in the morning and found the body. Coroner Sutton of Bath, made an investigation but deemed an inquest unnecessary. He leaves a wife and two small children, a mother and four brothers and one sister." (March 25, 1896, The Advocate of Bath, NY)
