Harold was born at home, the residence previously located at the corner of 21st Street and Franklin Road. He grew up on his father's farm. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1945 and was a brilliant student. He enjoyed playing both the piano and organ with great talent. Harold graduated from Purdue in 1950 and from IU School of Medicine in 1954.

He is survived by his younger sister, Lois Askren Kennedy of Tampa, FL; his two nieces, Dedre Kennedy Henderson of Denver, CO and Karen J. Kennedy of Tampa, FL. The family is especially grateful for the doctors and nurses at Community Hospital East, who provided compassionate care to Harold during his illness. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Indiana University School of Medicine in Harold Askren's name.
