The Rice County News, Frederick, KS, 22 Jun 1895, Saturday

On Monday last, about six o'clock in the evening, the good people of Geneseo and vicinity, to the number of between eighty and ninety, began walking and driving towards the house of W. S. Doan, our esteemed and popular townsman. The occasion for the above demonstration was the birthday of Mrs. Doan, and her many friends were anxious to show their love and esteem for her by giving her a surprise. All enjoyed themselves and passed a very pleasant evening in the company of their host and hostess. The cake was excellent, the ice cream delicious and the company did not leave until nearly midnight, and each one left hoping there would be many returns of the day, and that the lives of both would be unclouded sunshine.
