OBITUARY by San Antonio Light onJanuary 29, 1915
John Adam, 82 years old, a pioneer San Antonian, died early Friday morning at his home at the intersection of the Adam and Gembler roads, near San Antonio. Mr. Adam was a native of Germany, but sixty-five years ago he came to Texas and had lived here ever since. He first settled in Castroville, but after a residence of several years there, he purchased a farm near San Antonio and removed to it. He was a charter member of St. Joseph's Society, one of the oldest German organizations in San Antonio. Surviving Mr. Adam are three sons, John, Jacob and Joe, and one daughter, all of San Antonio.
With the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars from 1803 to 1815, feudalism fell away by reforms and the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire. Thereafter liberalism and nationalism clashed with reaction. The German revolutions of 1848–49 failed. The Industrial Revolution modernized the German economy, led to the rapid growth of cities and the emergence of the socialist movement in Germany. Prussia, with its capital Berlin, grew in power. Many left to other stable lands.
