Author. She was an award-winning writer, who was best known for her easy to understand writing style and very focused descriptions of social unrest and psychological fragmentation. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1956 and then worked for Vogue magazine from 1956 to 1963, first as a copywriter and later as an editor. In 1963, she wrote her first novel "Run River," which depicted the disintegration of a California family. She went on to pen numerous other novels, literary works, essays, and screenplays during her career including "Slouching Towards Bethlehem," (1968) "Play It as It Lays," (1970) "A Star Is Born," (1976) "Salvador," (1983) "Democracy," (1984) and "The Year of Magical Thinking." (2005) Her work also earned her various awards and honors including the National Book Award and the National Humanities Medal.
