James is the fourth of twelve children born to John Wallace Park and Caroline Madsen. He mostly grew up in Lakeview, Utah. James married Edna Parrish on December 18, 1914 in Moore, Idaho. They became parents to five children: Nathan Wallace, Elden Leo, Vada Lavon, Shirley Iris, and Elma Josephine. They lived in Blackfoot, Idaho, then Butte, Montana, then Pocatello, Idaho. James was a miner.
James and Edna divorced. James died of chronic endocarditis. He cited sickness as his exemption from the draft in World War I.
