Fletcher Simpson was the second of ten children born to James Alexander Simpson (1796–1887) and Mary Elizabeth "Eliza" Evans (1806–1875).

He married first to Ruth Ann Ewing on 09 Apr 1852 in Perry Township, Pike County, Illinois. They had four sons:
- James Alexander Simpson(1853-1936)
- Thomas E Simpson (1855-1873)
- Robert E Simpson (1857-1914)
- Albertus "Bert" Harvey Simpson (1859-1945)
Ruth Ann died in Oct 1861, in New Salem, Illinois.

Fletcher married again, to Mary Barrow, on 11 Jun 1864, in Pike County, Illinois. They had eight children:
- John Edwin Simpson (1865–1946)
- Oliver H Simpson (1867–1868)
- Melvin R Simpson (1870–1937)
- Nora A Simpson (1872–1936)
- Bertha Rose Simpson (1875–1945)
- stillborn infant Simpson (1876)
- Arthur Dode Simpson (1880–1967)
- George Aldelda Simpson (1881–1976)

Though the diagnosis and duration of his wife Mary's condition is unknown, according to 1920 census records, she was institutionalized at the Topeka State Hospital; she died there on 02 Dec 1921. While no direct inference can be made from the information available, their daughter, Nora, was also institutionalized as a young adult, at the Winfield Institute in Kansas.

Fletcher was a farmer.
