Mary is a 1st cousin, 1x removed to Francis Scott Key, a Federal prosecutor who wrote the poem, "In Defense of Fort McHenry" during the War of 1812 which later became the lyrics for the Star Spangled Banner.

Mary's father, Richard Ward Key, and Francis' grandfather, Francis Key, were brothers.
