History - James W. Shupe was the fifth child of Peter and Sarah Shupe. The family embraced the Mormon religion and James was baptized in the spring of 1844. Shortly afterwards the family moved to Nauvoo and were soon involved in the persecutions of the Saints in that place. James married Sarah Prunty in 1846. They were in Council Bluffs when the call came from the government for volunteers. James enlisted in Company "C" of the Mormon Battalion. When his army service was over, James came to the Salt Lake Valley, arriving late in July, 1847, where he resided until 1852 following his chosen profession of blacksmithing. He later moved to Ogden and the adjoining settlement of Riverdale. In 1856, he was one of the men chosen to assist Edward Martin's handcart company across the plains. His wife, Sarah, died in 1868 and a year later he married Louisa Crabtree. During his lifetime he held a number of positions in the Priesthood and was a Seventy at the time of his death. He passed away in North Ogden.
