John Q. Public, the great-great-grandson of Oregon pioneer Joe Public, died on July 12 at his home in Lake Oswego. A resident of the Lake Oswego area since 1947, Mr. Public was born on November 29., 1918, to William Public and Sally Ann Public.

After a brief residence in San Francisco, the Public family moved to Portland, where Mr. Public's father established Public Broadcasting, which operated on Sandy Boulevard from 1926 to 1989.

No one who met John Q. Public forgot his infectious passion for his non-work activities: alpine skiing. jazz music, Northwest history, and golf. During his long residence in Lake Oswego, Mr. Public participated in local activities, including serving as assistant scoutmaster for the local Boy Scout troop.

In 1941, he married Betty Smith, a legal secretary who had moved with her family to Portland from Bandon. They had three children, Fred, Albert and Suzy. During World War II, Public worked at the Troutdale aluminum plant.

In the mid 1950's, Mr. Public developed a new process for alu minum construction and left his job to start his own company. The new company, named Public Aluminum, grew and prospered throughout the 1950's and 1960's as a result of patents held on his new construction processes. It was in 1973 that Mr. Public sold his business to Alcoa and became a entrepreneur.

No one who met John Q. Public forgot his infectious passion for his non-work activities: alpine skijing, jazz music, Northwest history, and golf. During his long residence in Lake Oswego, Mr. Public participated in local activities. Over the next couple of decades Mr. Public devoted him self to his family and his passion of bird-watching.
