John Y. McNutt was the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Burch) McNutt. John married (1) Elizabeth Jones on March 31, 1837 and (2) Margaret Armstrong on August 25, 1840 in Johnson County, Indiana. John and Elizabeth had one daughter, Sarah Elizabeth McNutt (1838-1838). John and Margaret had 6 children, Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" (McNutt) Burdick, Charles M. McNutt, Margaret E. (McNutt) Overstreet, Emma J. (McNutt) Browning, Dr. William Y. McNutt and Dr. George Thompson McNutt.

John C. [sic] McNutt, an aged and highly respected citizen of Clark township, died at his home Sunday night of hemorrhage of the bladder. The funeral services were held at the residence on Wednesday and the remains were deposited in the vault of the Greenwood cemetery.
