Civil War Officer. Son of Major General John White Geary. Edward R. Geary was mustered into the service as a 2nd Lt. with Knap's Independent Battery E on Sept. 8, 1861. Geary was wounded at Cedar Mountain on Aug. 9, 1862. He was promoted to 1st Lt. on July 16, 1863. He was killed in action at the Battle of Wauhatchie, Tenn., on October 29, 1863. He was promoted to Captain that day, but died before he was told. His father had his commission in his pocket when his son was killed.
