Ranulfo Pico y Aguilar was the natural son of Pio de Jesus Pico and Felicita Aguilar. He was born on 27 May 1862 in Los Angeles County, California and baptized on 22 June 1862 at Los Angeles Plaza Church. In the 1880 United States Census, he was living with his father and his occupation was given as Collector.

Ranulfo had promised marriage to Maria Ygnacia Lopez and they were living together as man and wife. On 29 August 1883 she asked him to see her at Pio Pico's home, El Ranchito. When he arrived, she informed him that she was carrying his child and that it was time for him to fulfill his promise of marriage. He refused to do so, turned his back and began to walk away. She drew a pistol and shot him in the back of the neck. The bullet entered his brain and he was killed instantly. Maria Ygnacia ran to the Ranchito store and cried to Ranulfo's brother Alfredo, "Forgive me, I have killed your brother". After her arrest she changed her story, now claiming that Ranulfo was killed in a nearby field of corn by an unknown assailant. The feelings of the community at the time seem to have been in sympathy with Maria Ygnacia. She was bailed out of jail and there is no known record of any further legal proceeding against her. Ranulfo was buried on 30 August 1883 at Old Calvary Cemetery.
