Daughter of Garnett Wendell Kitchens and Sylvia Evelyn Pendley Taylor Edwards. Kitchens and Pendley never married. Garnett Wendlin Pendley was adopted by Idron Basil Taylor after he married Sylvia Evelyn Pendley, changing her maiden name from Garnett Wendlin Pendley to Garnett Wendlin Taylor. She was later given the nickname of "Billie Barlow" Taylor, and known simply as "Billie Grimes" after her marriage to Charles Gilbert "Buster" Grimes, Jr., about 1963.
