Joseph Daniel "Joe / Joey Dee" Durkan was born in Brooklyn, NY, the third child and second son of Patrick Joseph Durkan and Mary McDonald. Joe graduated from Bishop Loughlin High School, Brooklyn, NY and was appointed to West Point by Representative John M. Murphy. Joe, assigned to Company B-2 all four years, was on the Baseball and Swimming teams as a plebe and used his swimming skills as a Water Polo Team member in his yearling through firstie years. During those same three years, he was a member of the French Club. Joe was also a member of the Debate Council and Forum, Handball Club, and Fine Arts Forum, as well as the Catholic Chapel representative his last two years. All four years he was a member of the Catholic Acolytes. During his last two years at the Academy, he participated in SCUSA (Student Conference on U.S. Affairs). His Howitzer entry states in part that "Joey Dee is the Gaelic Brooklynite with the approved solutions for everything from metaphysics to pipe-smoking. Joe has always been ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. An avid swimmer, Joe has always found enough time on his way from the pool to the Brown Boy [comforter] to offer an attentive ear and a perceptive comment on anyone's woes and trials." As an example of his dry wit, during plebe year, he was part of a group that was asked if anyone was from the South. Joe responded that he was. When one of the upperclassmen indicated that he thought Joe was from Brooklyn, Joe boldly responded that he was from south Brooklyn, a clear "BJ" (bold before June) response.

On graduation, Joe was commissioned in Military Intelligence, detailed Signal Corps. In his five years on active duty, Joe served in the 26th Signal Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade, and 101st Airborne Division. He received a master's in business administration from the Harvard Business School, Harvard University, in 1975 and successfully applied his talents to numerous positions: Chase Bank, August 1976-August 1982 (Athens, Greece; Bahrain; Jakarta, Indonesia); United Gulf Bank, August 1982-October 1984 (Bahrain); Sumitomo Bank, 1985 (New York); Gas Energy, Inc., 1996; Keyspan Energy, 1997; and Thomson Architects, 2004 (serving as Chief Financial Officer).

As input to the Class of 1968's 20th Reunion, Joe informed his classmates that in 20 years, he had experienced 20 homes, 20 cars, 20 objectives met, 20 failures, many friends and was looking forward to many scores more.

Joe met the former Flora Ann Suraci at the Junior Chamber of Commerce in New York City in 1976, where Joe and Flora served on various committees, always involved in fundraising for children and other charitable causes. Flora knew that someone who volunteered for such efforts was a good man. Joe's classmates would readily attest to that. Joe and Flora married at the Manor in West Orange, NJ, June 11, 1978, and honeymooned in the Rhone country in France, with Joe trying out his French Club skills we can be sure. To this wonderful union, a son, Matthew MacArthur Durkan, was born on January 24, 1981. Joe had General MacArthur in mind when Joe and Flora selected Matthew's middle name.

Joe was a beloved classmate and companymate, a loving husband, and a loving father. He will be missed.

"Well Done; Be Thou at Peace."
