Harriet Linebarger was born about 1824 near Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana to Lewis and Jane (Henderson) Linebarger. When she was nine years of age her parents moved to Macoupin County, Illinois and that is where she married her first husband David Murphy on 6 May 1838. They moved with her parents to Montgomery County, Missouri in about 1839 and that is where the first of their six children was born. In 1843, her parents and siblings took one of the first large wagon trains on the Overland Trail to the Oregon Territory, but she and her husband decided to remain in Missouri and moved to Jasper County where they remained until about 1860 at which time they moved to Hunt County, Texas. In October 1861, her husband, David Murphy, died in Hunt County, Texas and Harriet moved to Dallas, Texas and that is where she married John A. Merrifield on 6 October 1870. Her died there on 21 June 1873 and in a sworn statement by his son John Welsh Merrifield dated 10 Dec 1883 in the Dallas County, Texas District Court she died on 9 Mar 1878.
