Reedus Back, 99, passed from this life to his heavenly home on Monday, November 29, 2021. Reedus was born in Letcher County, Kentucky, on September 17, 1922, to Joseph Back and Margaret (Maggie) Dixon Back.

Reedus is survived by his wife of 68 years, Carrie Jane Courtney Back. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Joseph (Carrie) Back of Culver City, California, Thomas (Darlene) Back of Richmond, Virginia, and Timothy (Sandra) Back of Versailles, Kentucky; six grandchildren, Charles Back, Katie Back, Anna Back, Lily Rose Back, Roeshelle Back, and Janelle Back; one great grandson, Ryland Welch; one sister, Joann Walters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Reedus learned the values of family and an honest day's work while growing up on a family farm in the Eastern Kentucky hills with eight brothers and sisters during the Great Depression.

He was a World War II veteran, a graduate of Berea College, and also earned a Doctorate in Education from the University of Kentucky. He had a long and distinguished career in education, teaching in the Madison County and Pendleton County school systems as well as serving as Principal of Pendleton County High School and University Breckinridge High School in Morehead. He later taught and served as Dean of Graduate Programs at Morehead State University. Upon retirement, Reedus spent many hours researching his family roots and eventually traveled to Germany in search of his ancestry. He wrote and contributed to several books on the Back family history, and was a founding member and long-time president of the Back-Bach Genealogical Society.

Reedus enjoyed gardening and was an active walker well into his nineties. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Morehead for almost sixty years, serving in various roles such as Sunday School teacher, church moderator, deacon and trustee.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm Thursday, December 2, 2021, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Aaron Coyle-Carr officiating. Private burial to follow with family only in Lee Cemetery.
