SPENCERVILLE — Homer Ross Culver, 80, of Spencerville, passed away in his home Monday afternoon, June 5, 2017, following a sudden illness.

He was born June 1, 1937, in Amanda Twp., Allen County, a son of Ross and Ruth Kemper Culver, who are deceased.

Surviving are his two daughters; Penny R. (Charlie) Buckmaster and Jennifer R. Holmes, both of Spencerville; four grandchildren; Patrick (Hannah) Holmes of Lafayette; Cody (Kylee) Holmes of Cridersville; Skyler (Fiance' Shania Johnson) Holmes and Conner Holmes, both of Spencerville; two great-grandchildren; Isabelle Campbell and Charlotte Holmes; two siblings; Jake "Merlin" (Louise) Culver of Kettering and Mary Lou Bok of Elida.

Preceding him in death are his sister Donna Denham and brother-in-law; Richard Bok.

Homer was a 1955 graduate of Spencerville High School, where he excelled in track and football. He holds track records now for over 60 years that still stand at Spencerville High, where he was named "The Timber Topper" in 1954 and 1955 for his record-breaking times. One record is 20.2 seconds in the 180 Low Hurdles, which is comparable to Olympic records. He held multiple records in the 100-yard dash, 200-yard dash, and high jump.

He served in the Ohio National Guard for 13 years. He worked several years at Davidson Enamel and retired after 33 years at the Lima Barrel and Drum Company.

He was a member of the Harry J. Reynolds American Legion Post 191 in Spencerville, where he served as Trustee for several years. He was an avid Spencerville Bearcat and Ohio State Buckeye fan and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and fishing.

Funeral services will be 7 PM Thursday in the Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville, with Rev. John G. Medaugh officiating. Military rites will follow the services at the funeral home by the Spencerville Veterans. A celebration of life will follow at the American Legion hall. Burial will be at a later date in the Maplewood Cemetery, East of Spencerville.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 7 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Spencerville Athletic Boosters, earmarked for the Track and Football programs. Condolences may be sent to [email protected]
