Obituary:

Marcella Ann Massengill, 69, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away on Sunday, November 14, 2021, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Marcella Ann Massengill, 69, formerly of Chattanooga, Tennessee gained her wings and took flight on Sunday, November 14, 2021, in Fort Worth, Texas.

She was a fun-loving person with a courageous spirit and a heart of gold. Marcella was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on April 14. 1952 to the late Edward and Barbara Miller Cummings. She was the oldest of seven children and enjoyed being a role model for each of them. Marcella was a true believer in Christ and his power to heal the body as well as the soul.

She attended Riverside High School and graduated from Tennessee Preparatory High School in Nashville. As a young adult she moved to New York City and worked as a security guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In the late 70's she returned to Chattanooga where she became the first African American and female security guard at Baroness Erlanger Hospital. She later relocated to Wilmington, Delaware and eventually settled in Salisbury, Maryland, where she managed a transitional home (rehabilitation services) for women, providing care and guidance to women recovering from drug and alcohol addiction.

Marcella genuinely enjoyed gardening, fashion, traveling and watching criminal justice shows. She never met a stranger and was known by many as a welcoming and giving person who never ceased to offer help or assistance to anyone in need.

She was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Barbara Miller Cummings, son, Nathaniel Cummings and brother, Robert Cummings.

Marcella leaves to cherish her memory devoted sons, Paul L. Massengill, Jr., Fort Worth, TX and Larry N. Massengill, Wilmington, DE; two grandchildren, Martavios Moore, Dallas, TX, Ka'si Massengill, North Carolina; sisters, Cardella Cummings, Decatur, GA, Bertha Lee Cummings, Chattanooga, TN, Lenora Lee, Indianapolis, IN; brothers, Jeffery Cummings and Willie Cummings, Anderson, IN; nephews, Brian (Elizabeth) McDonald, Bobby McDonald, Jr., Corey McDonald, Chattanooga, TN, Christopher Ridley, Seattle WA; nieces, Kenyata Smiley, Decatur, GA, Latoya Lee and Lanesha Brown (Harold) Floyd, Indianapolis, IN and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

She will lie in state on Saturday December 4, 2021 at 9:00 A.M. at the funeral home, followed by a service at 1:30 P.M. in the chapel. Burial: Highland Memorial Gardens.

Arrangements are by John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 423 622-9995.
