Funeral for George Foster Rudder Jr., 89, of Huntsville will be today, Dec. 16, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Tommy Rosenblum and Paul Clements officiating.
Burial will be in the Athens City Cemetery. Visitation will be today from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Rudder, who died Friday, Dec. 14, 2007, at his residence following a prolonged stay at Huntsville Hospital, was born May 13, 1918, in Limestone County to Maggie Vermillion and George Rudder Sr. He attended Athens city schools. He was captain of his basketball team and graduated from Tanner High School in 1938. George joined the National Guard 1443rd Civil Engineers when he was 16 years old. He married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Nancy Belle Black, in 1940. He was sent to help build the Aleutian Island defenses at the start of World War II. After 32 months in the Aleutians and a brief furlough, he served out the war in the European theater. He remained in the service after the war, transferring to the Air Force and eventually retired in 1966 as a Chief Warrant Officer. He spent the next 20 years in Civil Service, retiring as the Assistant Fire Chief for MaxwellGunter Air Force Base near Montgomery, Ala. His retirement years were spent fishing and traveling with Nancy in their motor home. He will be dearly missed by his special cat, Fat Boy.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Nancy; and was a wonderful father to his three children, Mike Rudder of Florence, Gail Gaines and Georgina Werka, both of Huntsville; five grandchildren, Bradley Rudder, Brent Rudder, "Little Mike" Gaines, Sebrina Holt and Bubba Broadway; five great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Madeline, Emilee, Carly and Bailey; and two brothers, Herbert Jenkins of Athens and Robert Rudder of Augusta, Maine.
