Obituary for Bernard Bruce Butler

B. Bruce Butler, Sr., 88, of Martinsburg went to be with his Lord and Savior Friday, July 23, 2021 at Hospice Inpatient Facility.

Born January 17, 1933 in Berkeley County he was the son of the late Bernard G. Butler and Harriet Rebecca Sperow Butler.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia Gregory Butler; two sons, B. Bruce Butler, Jr. and wife, Susan Neel Butler, and Gregory Scott Butler and late wife, Jennifer Ashton Butler; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Soporowski, B. Bruce Butler, III (Trey) and wife, Mai, Ashton Butler Lopez and husband, Michael, Steven Tyler Butler and wife Katlyn, and Jordan Elizabeth Butler; six great grandchildren, Caroline Grace Soporowski, Claire Elizabeth Soporowski, Jaxon Butler Soporowski, Amelia Ashton Lopez, Adeline Evgenia Frund, and Gryffin Tyler Butler; two brothers, Robert Sperow Butler and wife, Virginia Butler and Carroll Douglas Butler; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by sister, Betty Lee Butler and husband, Grant; and a brother, A. Elwood Butler and wife, Phyllis.

Bruce served in the Army and graduated from Hedgesville High School Class of 1952. He was a Berkeley County farmer and orchardist. He was a member of the Hedgesville High School football team in 1952-53, the FFA, West Virginia Farm Bureau, UCT member, West Virginia Horticultural Society, and in his younger years he was a member of the Berkeley County 4-H. He and his brother, A. Elwood Butler, won West Virginia Soil Conservation Farmers in 1992 and won with his two sons, B. Bruce Butler Jr. and Gregory S. Butler the 2012 West Virginia State Conservation Farm of the year. He was a dairy farmer for the majority of his life which led to selling dairy milk to Baltimore, Maryland Coop. with his brother Elwood. He was a staple down at Butler's Farm Market where you could find him shucking corn, making boxes and loading mulch.
