Son of William C. and Ethel M. Hogston Pickering. He married Helen L. Graham on Nov. 17, 1961, in Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Stanley L. (Carol) Claycomb and Terry E. (Cheryl) Claycomb; three brothers, Stanley "Bud" (Ellen) Pickering, Joe (Joyce) Pickering and Thomas (Kathleen) Pickering; and two sisters, Patricia (David) Schell and Janice (Richard) Meredith.

He worked for Caterpillar Inc. for 33 years.
