James Neal Greer departed on his final earthly adventure 12 Nov 2021.


He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anna; daughter, Lynn (Steve Keen); granddaughter, Kari Anne (Mike Pinasco); and great grandchildren, Rachel Allison Pinasco and Zachary Alexander Pinasco; brother, David Wood Greer and his wife Gloria; nephew, Michael Greer; brother-in-law, Michael Pitts McCord and his wife Vicki.


He was predeceased by his parents, James DeWitt Greer and Mildred Chastine Wood Greer; his paternal grandparents, James Claude and Effie Mae Williams Greer; and maternal grandparents, Albert Dunbar and Mamie Ethel Neel Wood.


Jim joined the Mississippi National Guard in early 1961and quickly moved to the US Navy. He joined the military during the Vietnam crisis and stayed 23 years, retiring as an E-9, Master Chief Aviation Storekeeper (AKCM) in 1984. He earned the Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation Good Conduct Medals, Armed Forced Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Gallantry Cross and the USAF Senior NCO Academy Ribbon.


He received his Associates Degree from Pensacola Junior College and a Bachelor's of Arts Degree from Park University and was one semester from his Master's Degree from Purdue University.


After retirement he continued to serve his country for another 20 years in civil service at the Naval Sea Systems Command Washington, DC and at the Commander Naval Region Europe, Naples Italy. At his retirement ceremony in Naples he received a standing ovation from the assembled Command; the Civilian Meritorious Service Award and a flag which had been flown over the Command Headquarters building.


He loved to travel and he loved to eat good food. While living in Fordham, Cambridgeshire, England and Naples, Italy he and Anna visited many countries in Europe and many other countries after retirement including Australia, New Zealand, China and Tibet. His last trip was a cruise above the Artic circle to see the Northern Lights. Through the military and on these adventures, he made many lifetime friends scattered all over the world.


He was a supporter of Colonial Williamsburg a Raleigh Tavern Society member and as a volunteer at the St George Tucker House. He was a life member of the Navy League and served as Chaplain in the Colonial Area Republican Men's Association (CARMA).


He served on the USS Ranger, USS Bon Homme Richard and the USS Forrestal. Duty stations were Memphis, TN, Cherry Point NC, Miramar, CA, Pensacola, FL, Norfolk, VA, Mildenhall UK and Naval Supply Systems Command (BUPERS), then he worked 20 more years as a civilian employee of the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, DC and Commander Naval Region Europe, Naples Italy. Jim loved the church above all, then his family and this country. He was a faithful Christian and a member of the Williamsburg church of Christ.


A celebration of life will be held at 2 PM, 20 Nov 2021 at the Williamsburg church of Christ, 227 Merrimac Trail, Williamsburg, Virginia. A service and burial with full military honors will be held at a later date at Quantico National Cemetery.
