Master Mariner Captain Thomas S Teed began sailing at 13 years old after his mother died, at 16 yrs he sailed the world several times as a young man going to Tasmania, Australia, then worked "coasters" there and returned to England working as a mate then finally owning his own vessel where he sailed the coast of England and also to the Netherlands and France. He married Elizabeth Warner June 15, 1843 In St Peters, Wisbech, England and they had 5 children: Jane (1844-1864), Robert Sargison Teed (1845-1891), Thomas Warner Teed (1847-1929), Emma Teed Hennessy (1848-1877), and Joseph Sargison Teed (1854-1926). They immigrated arriving in New York Oct 1856, he bought land to farm in Dover, Wi then sold it and took up sailing schooners on the Great Lakes after they moved to Chicago. He worked as a miller in off seasons (his father was a baker) and had many economic ups and downs. Started a flour mill in Libertyville, IL for several years until it BURNED Jan 1865 with limited insurance coverage. His daughter Jane died in 1864 and his son Thomas was badly injured in the Civil War. They survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 but their company jobs sites were burned, his daughter Emma died slowly of TB in 1877, and he struggled to make ends meet. He was Captain of lumber ships, then a tugman pulling schooners in an out of the lake into the Chicago River, then moved to Clear Lake, Iowa 1878-1882 to own a pleasure boat fleet there as this little town was booming with the summer tourist industry. He returned to Chicago and bought a newly made tug with his son, called "The Bob Teed" tug, retired to Union Grove, WI in 1886 and peacefully died there Jan 16, 1892- "one of the oldest and best known navigators on the chain (of Great) Lakes".. :-)
