Roy Norman Gravem, age 96, of rural Parker, Kan., formerly of Beatty, Ore., died Sept. 29, 2007, at the Life Care Center in Osawatomie, Kan.
Roy was born on July 15, 1911, in Shelton, Alaska. He was the younger of two sons born to Knute Larsen and Carrie (Gunderson) Gravem.
His family moved to Berkeley, Calif., when he was a young boy.
After graduating from high school, Roy went to Marin Junior College in Berkeley and then the University of California for four years, graduating with a degree in wood technology.
He was married to Lorraine Steinke in 1942. They became the parents of six children. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1973.
Roy was a carpenter in residential construction. He often worked three jobs at a time to support his family.
Roy had moved to Parker two and half years ago in 2005 to be close to his daughter due to his failing health. Prior to that time, he lived in Beatty for 31 years.
Roy loved the mountain all that had to do with nature. He kept busy planting pine trees, reading, writing, and doing carpentry work. He enjoyed reading Psalms in the Bible, his favorite verse being the 23rd Psalm. He always referred to Jesus as his good shepherd. His favorite classical book was "Moby Dick." He owned 70 acres of high desert country when he lived in Oregon and planted hundreds of pine trees on his property. He was a frequent contributor to the Wildlife Federation and other organizations of the same sort. He loved taking long walks in the forest. In his later years, he enjoyed playing golf. He also enjoyed dancing. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the lucky recipients of his many hugs. Roy was a very positive and loving person who never had any unkind words for anyone.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Lars Gravem.
He is survived by his two sons Norman Roy Gravem of Newport, Ore., and Roy Norman Gravem Jr. of Beatty, Ore.; four daughters Christy Wettstein of Seattle, Wash., Sherri Whitehurst of Garnett, Kan., Jeanette Kennedy of Osawatomie, Kan., and Jennifer Shay of Parker, Kan.; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Roy's family granted his wishes and donated his body to K.U. Medical Research.
