Sarah (Cissie) Fox, daughter of an immigrant Russian-Jewish tailor, married Jack Cohen (born Jacob Kohen) in 1924. She was a great supporter of her husband's business interests. Money they received as wedding gifts was invested in a wholesale venture. They worked together in their market trading business then opened the first two Tesco stores in 1931. With the successful growth of the supermarket chain, Sarah and Jack were generous philanthropists. He was knighted in 1969.
