Richard is the son of Stephen & Agnes (Foster) Winfree. He married Armindia Humphries on February 2, 1868 in Carroll County, Missouri.

He served in Company A, 37th Virginia Battalion of Virginia Cavalry of the Confederate States of America from July 20, 1864- March of 1865.
