Maud was the third of six daughters born to Sir Richard Salkeld and Lady Jane [Vaux] Salkeld, about 1444 at Corby Castle, Cumberland, England.
According to Hudleston and Boumphrey, "Fetherstonhaugh of Fetherstonhaugh. This noted Northumbrian family became landowners in Cumberland when Nicholas Fetherstonhaugh married in 1461 Maud, daughter of Sir Richard Salkeld and Lady Jane of Corby Castle, and so acquired the manor of Triermain, which their grandson Albany sold to William, Lord Dacre in 1553. Albany married in 1543 Lucy, daughter of Thomas Dudley of Yanwath, Westmorland. The family line at Fetherstonhaugh was continued by their eldest son Alexander [d.1596], who married Anne, daughter of Sir Richard Lowther. A younger son, Henry, founded the Kirkoswald branch of the family. Arms: Gules a chevron between three ostrich feathers erect Argent."
