The way the story goes is that John Bristol as kidnapped in 1901 by Dr Kit Mattox. He was taken from the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. Dr Mattox brought him to Jones County NC, where he gave him to a farmer down the road from him. John is listed in 1910 US Census as the adopted son of Matthew Nathaniel Harriett and Idella Bynum.
He married Mattie Bell Register on December 6 1937 in Jones County North Carolina. Mattie is the daughter of George Everette Register and Sally Rebecca Oglisby.
