SAM M. WOLFE

Samuel Marion Wolfe, attorney general of South Carolina, is a son of S. C. Wolfe of Charlotte, N. C., and Ida May Mobley of Heath Springs, Lancaster County. After the death of his father, his mother came with him to this State; he was at the time four years of age. On his maternal side he is related to the Ervins and the Marions, the latter originally of the Huguenot settlers in and about Charleston. His father was a member of the old dry goods firm of Wolfe, Barringer & Trotter of Charlotte. His legacy consisted principally of an insatiable desire to exploit every phase of a boy's life and an ambition to accomplish something worth while as a man. His mother's wish to make him a minister was abandoned to his own dream to become a lawyer and he was given ann open but difficult road for its realization.

Mr. Wolfe's training was given him by his mother. He attended night school when working and this enabled him to "make his grades." From the high school, he went to the Patrick Military Institue, then at Anderson, and after two years at Patrick, he went to Furman University, where he entered the sophomore class and graduated with the degree of bachelor of arts in the class of 1903. He taught school for three years and read law in the meantime. He spent five years in law offices and at the University of South Carolina in the study of law, but before completing his course at the university, he found it necessary to seek admission to the bar and begin work.

As a student Mr. Wolfe headed many of his college organizations, took an active interest in athletics and in the literary societies and was honored in many instances in a representative capacity. He has been a member of the Anderson bar since his admission to practice law ten years ago. He is a member of the State Bar Association and is at present president of the Anderson Bar Association. He was a member of the Anderson delegation in the house of representatives during the years 1914-1818, inclusive. As a member of the general assembly he sought at all times to give his support to constructive legislation. He is possibly one of the youngest men ever elected to the office of attorney general. He was nominated over two competitors in the Democratic primary last August and was elected in November.
